  • I highly recommend checking out St. Martin's if you are looking for a church in the Bridgewater/Somerville/Warren/Bedminster area. Friendly group of people with a nice mix of young and old(er!) folks. The church and grounds are very beautiful and the Sunday school program is outstanding.

Pros: The part-time music teacher, Ms. Lory, is awesome. My son also likes Ms. Rachel (a Columbia University graduate), who teaches another class but played with my son’s class several times. The school is clean and neat. The first impression was good, that was why we chose to drive our son 20 minutes one way to this one instead of other cheaper schools closer to home.

Cons: About two weeks into my son’s first time at school, I hided in my car at the parking lot adjunct to the playground. The teachers told me before that my son had hard time to blend in with the class so I wanted to know exactly how he behaved. And I was speechless to watch as my son crying very loudly and alone in the January cold weather while other kids were having fun at the playground – the two teachers just chat with each other. Finally I could not take it any more and jumped out of the car, waving to the ladies – still following the teachers’ previous advice not to let my son see me – the Montessori teacher saw me and gave the “not to approach” signal, then her assistant went to comfort my son, who immediately stopped crying. NO wonder my son did not want to go to school every morning.

At least once a week, when I picked up my son at school, his diaper was soiled with urine and I have to change it at the parking lot.

Another day when I dropped my son off, one of his classmates, Claudia, was crying badly. But at the picking up time, I heard the teacher told Claudia’s father “everything was fine” without any words about the tears.

Several kids got sick on July 13th at the school during the summer session. Kyle was one of them. His mom told me that Kyle throw up shortly after she picked him up at school. Doctor said it might be food poison -- and Kyle was sick for 6 days because of this. My son was lucky – he was late that Friday and missed the snack time. But other parents (including me) whose kids were not sicken, never got any info from school regarding this unfortunate event.

Two moms from my son’s class told me that, the school policy is to assign students to either one of the two “primary” classes after the toddler program – the moms have to make up creative stories to get their kids into Ms. Rachel’s class because they don’t like the head teacher’s Pakistan accent (I am an Asian too – you should have already known if you read this far). The head teacher/director of education, who teaches the other primary class, never said Hi to me again after I confirmed that my son is not coming back in September.

The business manager, also Pakistani, charged me for picking up my son late. For the 8 months my son was there, I might be late for a total of 45 minutes on about 5 occasions (that was less than 10 minutes late each time on average, and the worst one was around 15 minutes late). The school policy is one dollar for one late minute. What I did not get is that, my son was only at school for the morning session – when I was late after the 11:30 am pick up time, there were still one teacher and several kids in the classroom, having lunch – I was never as late as to interrupt any kid’s nap – so why did they make it such a big deal? But hey, on a second thought, the fine is much better than a speeding ticket, right?

Conclusion: Now my son goes to the Albrook School. For 20% more tuition, my son can enjoy 7 times more varieties at the many times larger playground, 10 times more learning materials in the classroom, a huge indoor multi-purpose ball room when the weather is really bad outside, two swimming pools. Plus, all the classes are staffed with Montessori certified teachers, who also change diapers, clean tables/toys – there is no “teacher assistant”. And they have the courtesy as not to charge me for picking up my son late during lunch time.
